Kurumi Tokisaki (ときさき くる, Tokisaki Kurumi?) is the main protagonist of the Date A Bullet spinoff series. She is a clone of the original Kurumi Tokisaki who ended up in the Neighboring World after her death. She is known as Empty (エンプティ?) during the majority of the first volume when her identity is stolen by Hibiki Higoromo.

Summary[]

Arriving at the Neighboring World sometime after dying, Kurumi is left in a badly injured state, which leads to her identity getting stolen. However, after reclaiming her identity from Hibiki Higoromo, Kurumi resolves to travel through the Neighboring World in order to find a way back to the real world. In doing so, she hopes to reunite with the boy from the other world she fell in love with again after seeing one of the Spirit's memories firsthand.

Appearance[]

Like the original, Kurumi wears the Astral Dress Elohim, a red and black Gothic Lolita dress. However, there are some discrepancies between this clone's dress and the original Kurumi's outfit. The most notable difference is an ornate translucent veil choker as opposed to the original's simpler choker. Her sleeves are also far more puffy, and her dress lacks shoulder straps. Furthermore, where there is a diamond-like pattern around the skirt of her dress on the original Kurumi, this Kurumi has in place a translucent section of fabric.

During her time in the Neighboring World, she has frequently modified her appearance to suit the culture of each region she is visiting. In the Ninth Region Yesod, she wears a sparkling red and black idol costume. In the Eighth Region Hod, she assumes both a formal red kimono and a casual red and black bikini for the mock war. In the Seventh Region Netzach, she gets dressed in a red and black bunny girl outfit to gather money and a Sherlock Holmes cosplay during the murder mystery case. And finally, she equips pitch black battle armor when playing the role of a gunslinger in the Fifth Region Gevurah.

Personality[]

As a Kurumi Tokisaki clone, her initial personality is very similar to the original. She can be coy, seductive, and sarcastic at times. However, her primary objective is finding the boy from the other world, whom she vicariously fell in love with again after seeing the Spirits' memories through the Compile crystals. To that end, Kurumi is determined and driven to return back to the real world as her main objective. She does, however, appear to be more trigger-happy than the original Kurumi. Albeit jokingly, she does threaten Hibiki multiple times with her flintlock pistol and frequently hits Hibiki when chastising her, although neither attempts are done with the intention to cause serious harm.

Additionally, Kurumi can be also considerate at times to people who are about to die, deciding to respect Kareha's last moments and even swearing revenge against the White Queen for her death.

History[]

Background[]

Kurumi initially started out as one of the numerous Kurumi clones created through the Eight Bullet Het. After nearly being persuaded by Shido, the original Kurumi stabbed her in the back in retaliation. However, she continued to persist with her feelings and eventually asked Shido out on a date at a mock wedding photo location where she tried out a bridal outfit. After writing her wish on a tanabata sheet of paper, the original Kurumi found her and engulfed her back into her shadow, where she eventually died in despair. Somehow, her soul ended up traveling to the Neighboring World, where she eventually ended up in a near-death state in the Tenth Region Malkuth.

Powers and Abilities[]

Spirit Form[]

Living up to her reputation as the Worst Spirit, Kurumi is a brutal fighter with a unique set of powers that make her a difficult opponent for many. For unknown reasons, despite being a clone, she is still able to use the special bullets of Zafkiel.

Zafkiel[]

Angel: Zafkiel (刻々帝ザフキエル, Zafukieru?. lit. "Time Emperor")

Weapon: Clock, Flintlock Pistol & Musket

Astral Dress: Elohim (神威霊装・三番エロヒム, Erohimu?. lit. "Spirit Dress of God's Authority, Number 3")

Time Manipulation[]

Through a combination of using time, shadows, and Reiryoku as fuel, Kurumi can manipulate time through her bullets. Her flintlock pistol and musket both possess special bullets that can cause different effects on the subject's time depending on the number of the bullet.

To activate any power she needs, she first needs to call her Angel (regardless of whether the Angel has been summoned already or not) and position her flintlock at the number of the bullet on the Angel, in which the power is loaded from the number into her firearm. Next, she fires that loaded gun to her target; if Kurumi intends to use the effect on herself, then she shoots herself. The bullets take effect the instant they connect with their target.

The downside of these bullets is that they consume her time, or in other words, her life force. This is visually represented by the clock in her left eye moving clockwise. The cost also differs between bullets, in which one may cost more time than the other. In case of the last two bullets, they can even cost her her entire remaining time. Despite accepting her identity as a Kurumi Tokisaki clone, it is currently unknown how she can use <Zafkiel>'s special bullets.

Due to the flow of time being different in the Neighboring World, the initial powers of the 11th and 12th bullets couldn't be used. As such, Kurumi made the irreversible choice to use the Fifth Region Gevurah's RPG system to modify Zafkiel, granting new powers to her final two bullets.

  • First Bullet Aleph (一の弾アレフ, Arefu?): Accelerates external time on its target. Kurumi frequently uses this bullet to increase her own speed in battle.
  • Second Bullet Bet (二の弾ベート, Bēto?): Slows down the external time on its target. Used to stall an approaching enemy, this bullet is an alternative to the Seventh Bullet in case Kurumi wants to save time.
  • Third Bullet Gimmel (三の弾ギメル, Gimeru?): Speeds up internal time to cause the subject to age.
  • Fourth Bullet Dalet (四の弾ダレット, Daretto?): Rewinds time on a target. However, despite restoring physical injuries, it cannot resurrect those who are already dead.
  • Fifth Bullet Hei (五の弾ヘイ, Hei?): Allows Kurumi to see a glimpse of the future. Overuse of this bullet strains Kurumi's mind from the sheer amount of visions seen.
  • Sixth Bullet Vav (六の弾ヴァヴ, Vavu?): Sends the consciousness of its target into the body of a past version of themselves. Consequently, since only the mind is sent back, the Reiryoku and time spent on traveling are reset with every loop. However, unlike the Twelfth Bullet, the user is only able to travel back to a few days at maximum regardless of how much time is used.
  • Seventh Bullet Zayin (七の弾ザイン, Zain?): Temporarily freezes the target's time.
  • Eighth Bullet Het (八の弾へット, Hetto?): Creates a temporal clone of the target. This bullet was unlocked after using the City of Devouring Time to consume Cistus' entire existence. However, unlike the original, this Kurumi is terrified of using this power due to being a clone herself, and would only consider using it as a last resort.
  • Ninth Bullet Tet (九の弾テット, Tetto?): Allows Kurumi to share her senses with someone in a different time or dimension.
  • Tenth Bullet Yud (十の弾ユッド, Yuddo?): Peeks into the past of any object struck.
  • Eleventh Bullet Yud Aleph (十一の弾ユッド・アレフ, Yuddo Arefu?): Sends its target to the future. The distance of time traveled forward is exponentially proportional to the amount of time and Reiryoku spent. After the effects of the bullet wears off, users are sent back to their original time period. However, due to this initial power being incompatible with how time flows in the Neighboring World, it was modified into a new power. The new Eleventh Bullet is a power of unparalleled defense. Similar to the Seventh Bullet, it freezes the time of the target. However, unlike the Seventh Bullet, the target becomes indestructible for as long as time is frozen.
  • Twelfth Bullet Yud Bet (十二の弾ユッド・ベート, Yuddo Bēto?) Originally, this bullet sends its target to the past, with the distance of time traveled back exponentially proportional to the amount of time and Reiryoku spent. However, like the Eleventh Bullet, this power was not compatible with how time flows in the Neighboring World and was subsequently modified in Gevurah. The new power of the Twelfth Bullet is regarded by Kurumi as an absolute attack that she only has the energy to shoot once. Derived from the powers of the Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Bullets, the new Yud Bet sends both the user and target to a mental world where consciousness is shared and time is halted.

City of Devouring of Time[]

Her Angel is very powerful. Each time she uses its abilities, it consumes a bit of her time (life force). In order to replenish her life force, Kurumi possesses the ability to absorb the time of anyone who steps into the boundary of her shadow. In order to target a large crowd, she can summon a red barrier that serves a similar function, which she calls the City of Devouring Time (時喰みの城, Toki Hami no Shiro?). While it is normally used to replenish time, it can also be used to directly regain Reiryoku as well. After modifying <Zafkiel> using Gevurah's RPG system, the range of City of Devouring Time also got extended. Afterwards, she was able to drain the time of the RPG monsters in the Fifth Region Gevurah, something which wasn't possible beforehand.

Clones[]

Initially, the powers of the Eighth Bullet were sealed for Kurumi. However, after using the City of Devouring Time to completely devour Cistus's existence, she managed to unlock the Eighth Bullet. However, being already a clone, any clones she further creates will quickly deteriorate in quality. She was able to create one clone, which she named after Cistus before the second one deteriorated into a copy of her younger self. However, Kurumi is also hesitant to use this bullet afterwards, as she can feel her remaining life force being shaved away with each usage.

Only during the final battle against White Queen does Kurumi no longer hesitate to use the Eighth Bullet. She had gained enough time to create approximately fifty clones of herself. Similar to the real-world Kurumi, the clones created by this version of Kurumi cannot use the time-manipulating bullets of her Angel. [1]

Shadow Manipulation[]

Kurumi is able to quickly enter any shadow for a speedy escape. The territory within her own shadow serves as her own personal pocket dimension. According to Kurumi, she can even use the shadows to go through normal obstacles like a wall separating rooms from each other.

RPG Magic[]

While only within specific locations in the Fifth Region Gevurah, Kurumi is able to use its system of magic after registering with the Adventure Guild. Kurumi specializes in Dark Magic, which focuses mostly on debuffing and incurring status ailments onto the enemy. However, due to her unique nature as a Spirit rather than being a Quasi-Spirit, the system is unable to fully accommodate for her, leading to her status card to be filled with gibberish text and symbols. Still, her unique powers also caused her to unlock Time Magic, something which Tsuan notes has never been heard of before.

Additionally, if she wishes, Kurumi can manually turn off the ability to use magic while in Gevurah.

Quotes[]

  • (To White Queen) “Kihihihihihihihihihihi! Ah, ah! It’s a pity, a real shame! Two more steps, just two more steps! If you wanted to kill and wonderfully annihilate me!” [2]
  • (To Hibiki Higoromo) “Anyway, don’t you think so too? Not knowing his name, or remembering anything, it’s crazy to like a person with only a vague recollection to go by.” [3]
  • (To Knight) “The future is always indeterminate and changes as one sees fit. However, between a future seen by my own will and a future that was forcibly shown, the difference in behavior is clear.” [4]
  • (Her final words before leaving the Neighboring World) “It’s in poor taste to be so surprised here. Everyone, thank you very much. I came here as a traveler and will leave here as a traveler... Yes. I can’t say that there were only good memories, but I enjoyed being involved with everyone. I didn’t know how much fun this long, long journey would be, and it felt like it would continue forever. But there is no such thing as a never-ending journey. In that case, this journey was nothing more but aimed at not ending here at that point. But my journey through the Neighboring World ends here. But, it’s not boring because it’s over. And it doesn’t mean that reality will be fine just because it’s the end. It’s likely that... only the person who made this decision can understand... how it’s a complicated feeling to consider. You all who are staying in the Neighboring World are right. The girls who decided to leave the Neighboring World are also correct. Certainly... there are no mistakes for either side. Now then, everyone. Regardless of what happens to this world afterwards, I’ll leave it all to you.” [5]

Trivia[]

  • According to the afterword of volume 3, the reason for why Kurumi can use Zafkiel despite being a clone will be explained during the climax of the story.
    • In Date A Bullet: Dead or Bullet, the White Queen explains that her ability to use Zafkiel is because of the abundant amount of Reiryoku in the Neighboring World compared to reality.
  • According to Kurumi, leaving aside the White Queen, the idol battle in the Ninth Region Yesod was the most memorable thing she struggled against in the Neighboring World. [6]
