Kurumi Tokisaki (ときさき くる, Tokisaki Kurumi?) is the third Spirit to appear. Due to her brutal actions, she is referred to as the Worst Spirit (最悪の精霊, Saiaku no Seirei?). She is also the first Spirit to appear as an antagonist in the Date A Live series.

Summary

Mana Takamiya reported that Kurumi Tokisaki is the most dangerous Spirit ever known. She has killed over 10,000 people, with an estimate of only around 100 being Spacequake victims. As such, her title as the Worst Spirit comes from personally killing her victims with her own hands.

Kurumi Tokisaki had used unstated and unexplained methods to personally transfer into Shido Itsuka's class so that she could get closer to him. Her purpose and reason for moving were simple: consume Shido Itsuka, and in doing so, gain the Reiryoku sealed within his body. During the time Kurumi was a Raizen High School student, she almost succeeded in consuming Shido. However, she was forced to retreat after being overwhelmed by Kotori Itsuka's destructive might. Kurumi had claimed that it was because she simply wasn't prepared to face her, but later argued that she could defeat Kotori if she had more time stored up.

Later, it was revealed (at the end of Volume 4) that Kurumi had a conversation with a mysterious being that made it seem like she was talking to herself. Here, she stated her real goal was to seek Shido out in order to be able to use her Twelfth Bullet Yud Bet to travel 30 years back in time and kill the First Spirit. To accomplish that, she required a significant amount of Reiryoku which she didn't possess, which is why she wanted to consume Shido. Shido held the Reiryoku of three Spirits within him, enough for her to be able to use the Twelfth Bullet and still have some power left over to kill the First Spirit.

Appearance

Kurumi is "a girl with astonishing beauty" as described by Shido Itsuka. She appears to be elegant and has very polite manners. She has pearly skin and long, black hair usually tied in long twin tails. Her right eye is red-tinted while her left eye appears as a golden, inorganic clock face, which is covered by her bangs and only revealed when she transforms into her Spirit form. When the hands of the clock eye are not in motion, it typically rests in the 3 o'clock position. Five years ago, Kurumi once wore an eyepatch to conceal her clock-like left eye, though she now considers it shameful and covers the eye with her hair instead. As a human, and after being sealed, her left eye is identical to her right. As a college student, she begins to wear earrings. Her hair is now partially tied back with a red ribbon, no longer covering her left eye.

Kurumi's Astral Dress is made out of crimson and black frills, giving her the appearance of an elegant Gothic Lolita with uneven twin tails that emulate the minute and hour hand of a clock.[5] On her head, she usually wears a big crimson net bow to hold her hair. She also wears a red and black collar on her neck. After absorbing Nia's Sephira Crystal, her Astral Dress gains several crosses reminiscent of Nia's nun-like Astral Dress. Kurumi's height is stated to be 157cm, and her three sizes are B85/W59/H87. When not in her Spirit form, Kurumi usually tends to wear either the female winter uniform of Raizen High School or a monotone black Gothic Lolita dress.

Personality

Kurumi is the type of person whose character is difficult to read. She possesses a dislike of humanity that borders on mistrust, which is something that she shares with most of the other Spirits in her debut. She is a skilled actress as she is capable of putting on the façade of an innocent, curious young girl when she needs to. This skill of hers is shown when she registers as a student at Raizen High School and speaks in a polite manner. However, under that mask lies a madwoman, prone to fits of insane laughter and possessing no regard for human life, viewing them as a food source to restore her own time, and thus, a disposable commodity.

There is a twisted justice behind her methods, however, as the people that she brutally murdered were would-be rapists and animal abusers. Also, a good sign of her sense of justice lies in her ultimate objective: to go back in time, kill the First Spirit, prevent the Spacequakes from ever happening, and save millions of lives in the process. This goal made <Phantom> call her a kind person, albeit sarcastically.

In hindsight, Kurumi possesses some degree of innocence that her psychotic behavior has not entirely ruined; she has a soft spot for small animals and other creatures. She once slaughtered four humans not because she needed to replenish her time, but because they were trying to kill a kitten. She also appeared to have some desire for a normal life, a chance at redemption, as Shido was able to speak with one of her many timelines and nearly convinced her before the true Kurumi interrupted.

However, despite her redeeming qualities of not killing without a reason, Kurumi doesn't think of herself as a great person and even appears to hate being called one. When Shido stated that he would not give up on her despite her being a murderer, she responded by using her City of Devouring Time on the students of Raizen High School. She even summoned a Spacequake, which could have killed them all, in an attempt to make him give up on her. Also, when <Phantom> called her a kind person, Kurumi's initial response was to try to shoot her.

Her ability to summon clones of herself from her past adds even more complexity to her character. The clones are essentially herself, which means they have the same personality. However, they also have free will to an extent, even if they share memories, goals, fears, and obsessions. Due to being made from the past, the clones may contain traits that Kurumi no longer possesses, namely her old chunnibyou habits. Kurumi has shown a degree of embarrassment regarding this part of her past and those clones in particular whenever it is brought up.

Kurumi appears to have a particular fondness for cats, as shown by her brutally murdering a group of men who were shooting at one with pellet guns. In an Omake, it is shown that she can be quite embarrassed about this. When Shido and Tohka caught her, she ended up going so far as to have one of her clones pretend to be the real her and "dispose" of her so that she could get out of the situation without ruining her reputation.

Before becoming a Spirit, Kurumi had a strong sense of justice. While lamenting about the inequality in the world, she always possessed a strong desire to help those in need. This trait was considered both pure and naïve, the latter of which Mio took advantage of to trick her into becoming a Spirit that hunted down other Spirits that were incompatible with their Sephira Crystals. After becoming more jaded, Kurumi is shown as having developed a stronger tolerance towards despair, being the only Spirit to not immediately inverse after seeing Shido killed throughout her numerous time loops.

As a verbal tic, Kurumi has a habit of saying "Ara, Ara" (あら、あら) when particularly amused by something. Additionally, Kurumi also has a distinctive "Kihihihihi" (きひひひひ) laugh.

History

Background

Kurumi was once an ordinary human before becoming a Spirit. She grew up as the daughter of a rich family and was beloved by her parents. However, one day while returning home she was attacked by a monster. She was saved when a girl wearing a dress made of light killed the monster. The girl introduced herself as Mio Takamiya and claimed herself to be an "ally of justice". She told Kurumi that the monster was called a Spirit and asked her if she wanted a power like hers to help her fight them. Wanting to protect her family and friends, Kurumi accepted the offer and was given the Sephira Crystal containing Zafkiel. Afterward, she bonded with it, unknowingly turning herself into a Spirit.

Working together with Mio, Kurumi began hunting down Spirits, with her killing at least over 50 Spirits during that time. However, one day after killing a Spirit, Kurumi left Mio with the usual task of cleaning up the body. However, after leaving like usual, this time she decided to turn back and invite Mio to come with her to her friend Sawa's house, hoping that an adorable cat could defrost Mio's usual melancholic demeanor. However, to Kurumi's horror, instead of a monster lying on the ground, she found her best friend Sawa lying dead as Mio was holding a red Sephira Crystal. Realizing Sawa was the Spirit and she had killed her, Kurumi started to inverse. However, before the transformation was complete, she used her Fourth Bullet Dalet to reverse time and prevent the transformation by returning to a moment before being overwhelmed by despair.

Mio then revealed the truth: both her identity as the First Spirit and how she was having the Sephira Crystals bond with humans, turning them into monsters, and then killing the host in order to slowly refine the Crystals. Mio claimed that she intended to entrust the Sephira Crystals to those chosen among humanity, but hesitated when she was asked about her motives. Then, Mio thanked Kurumi for all her work so far before causing Kurumi to blackout. After some unknown amount of time had passed, Kurumi woke up in a giant crater after causing a Spacequake, with no recollection of anything except how the powers of her Angel worked. Just as an AST team was preparing to attack her, Kurumi fled the scene by escaping into her shadow. While deliberately her current situation, she eventually resolved to use the Tenth Bullet Yud on herself to regain her memories. Afterward, Kurumi swore to use her Twelfth Bullet Yud Bet to travel back in time in order to kill Mio and prevent the existence of Spirits from ever happening.

At some point, using her ability to make clones of herself, Kurumi had created a massive information network. In order to gain enough time to use the Twelfth Bullet, she and her clones began to prey on humans, taking many lives in the process. However, the many lives she had taken attracted the attention of DEM, who sent Mana Takamiya after her. They fought many battles, during which Mana had always killed her. However, unbeknownst to Mana, she was just killing Kurumi's clones. Much later, <Phantom> appeared before Kurumi at some unknown point in time and told her about Shido Itsuka, along with the Reiryoku sealed inside his body. Having nothing to lose, Kurumi infiltrated Raizen High School through unknown means to confirm if this story was true.

Powers and Abilities

Spirit Form

Living up to her reputation as the Worst Spirit, Kurumi is a brutal fighter with a unique set of powers that make her a difficult opponent for many. Her large number of clones ensures that it is nearly impossible to match her in a battle of numbers, with her being reported to be the Spirit that did the most damage during the raid against DEM's Japanese Branch Headquarters. Uniquely, Kurumi is a Spirit who has taken in two Sephira Crystals, allowing her access to two separate Angels.

Zafkiel

Angel: Zafkiel (刻々帝ザフキエル, Zafukieru?. lit. "Time Emperor")

Weapon: Clock, Flintlock Pistol & Musket

Astral Dress: Elohim (神威霊装・三番エロヒム, Erohimu?. lit. "Spirit Dress of God's Authority, Number 3")

Zafkiel is an S-ranked Angel that takes the form of a large clock with Roman numerals, accompanied by an archaic pistol and musket that serve as its hour and minute hands respectively.

Time Manipulation

Through a combination of using time, shadows, and Reiryoku as fuel, Kurumi can manipulate time through her bullets. Her flintlock pistol and musket both possess special bullets that can cause different effects on the subject's time depending on the number of the bullet.

To activate any power she needs, she first needs to call her Angel (regardless of whether the Angel has been summoned already or not) and position her flintlock at the number of the bullet on the Angel, in which the power is loaded from the number into her firearm. Next, she fires that loaded gun at her target; if Kurumi intends to use the effect on herself, then she shoots herself. The bullets take effect the instant they connect with their target, and they do not cause injury despite appearing no different from the bullets used offensively.

The downside of these bullets is that they consume her time, or in other words, her life force. This is visually represented by the clock in her left eye moving clockwise. The cost also differs between bullets, in which one may cost more time than the other. For the last two bullets, they can even cost her her entire remaining time. If Kurumi cannot use one of the bullets, its corresponding numeral on <Zafkiel>’s clock loses its light.

  • First Bullet Aleph (一の弾アレフ, Arefu?): Accelerates external time on its target. Kurumi frequently uses this bullet to increase her own speed in battle.
  • Second Bullet Bet (二の弾ベート, Bēto?): Slows down the external time on its target. Used to stall an approaching enemy, this bullet is an alternative to the Seventh Bullet in case Kurumi wants to save time.
  • Third Bullet Gimmel (三の弾ギメル, Gimeru?): Speeds up internal time to cause the subject to age.
  • Fourth Bullet Dalet (四の弾ダレット, Daretto?): Rewinds time on a target. However, despite restoring physical injuries, it cannot resurrect those who are already dead.
  • Fifth Bullet Hei (五の弾ヘイ, Hei?): Allows Kurumi to see a glimpse of the future. Overuse of this bullet strains Kurumi's mind from the sheer amount of visions seen.
  • Sixth Bullet Vav (六の弾ヴァヴ, Vavu?): Sends the consciousness of its target into the body of a past version of themselves. Consequently, since only the mind is sent back, the Reiryoku and time spent on traveling are reset with every loop, which allows this bullet to be used repeatedly until accumulated mental fatigue proves too much for the user. Unlike the Twelfth Bullet, the user isn't able to control the exact time period they return to, and they are only able to travel back to a few days at maximum regardless of how much time is used. However, the user will remain in the past indefinitely. Due to giving a thank you kiss to Shido for saving her from Kotori, this bullet was left sealed for Kurumi after the events of Volume 4.
  • Seventh Bullet Zayin (七の弾ザイン, Zain?): Temporarily freezes the target's time.
  • Eighth Bullet Het (八の弾へット, Hetto?): Creates a temporal clone of the target.
  • Ninth Bullet Tet (九の弾テット, Tetto?): Allows Kurumi to share her senses with someone on a different time axis. Due to her rarely getting to use this bullet, Kurumi admits it still takes a fair degree of effort to share her thoughts.
  • Tenth Bullet Yud (十の弾ユッド, Yuddo?): Peeks into the past of any object struck. By using this bullet on herself, Kurumi was able to regain her memories from her amnesia.
  • Eleventh Bullet Yud Aleph (十一の弾ユッド・アレフ, Yuddo Arefu?): Sends its target to the future. The distance of time traveled forward is exponentially proportional to the amount of time and Reiryoku spent. After the effects of the bullet wears off, users are sent back to their original time period.
  • Twelfth Bullet Yud Bet (十二の弾ユッド・ベート, Yuddo Betto?) Sends its target to the past. It shares the same drawback as the Eleventh Bullet in terms of cost for the length of time traveled, and likewise sends its users back to their original time period after the effect wears off. As seen from Kurumi experimenting with this bullet on both Origami and Shido, this method of time travel to the past can cause either stable time loops or alter the course of history.

When Kurumi temporarily regains Zafkiel from Beast's third sword, she is unable to use Dalet, Vav, Zayin, Het, Yud Aleph, or Yud Bet due to her parallel world self still being alive in her world. She also wasn't willing to use her own lifespan as fuel for her remaining bullets, but jokingly says that she could have used them if allowed to replenish her time with the citizens hiding in the Spacequake shelters.

City of Devouring of Time

While Kurumi's Angel is very powerful, it consumes a bit of her time (life force) each time she uses her special bullets. In order to replenish her life force, Kurumi possesses the ability to absorb the time of anyone who steps into the boundary of her shadow. In order to target a large crowd, she can summon a red barrier that serves a similar function, which she calls the City of Devouring Time (時喰みの城, Toki Hami no Shiro?). While consuming time, her clock eye spins counterclockwise. Kurumi can drain her victims' time to the extent where they would die. As befitting her title as the Worst Spirit, numerous people have fallen prey to this. However, after losing to Kotori, she would usually refrain from taking all of her victim's time if possible to remain hidden from DEM and Ratatoskr's radar.

While it is normally used to replenish time, it can also be used to directly regain Reiryoku as well. Upon hearing Origami's request to travel back in time, Kurumi used a specialized version of her shadow to very quickly take away a portion of her Reiryoku as payment for the travel. In preparation for the war against DEM, Kurumi used her clones also employing this technique to greatly expand the range of her shadow to the size of an entire town. However, such large-scale replenishment is much more taxing and requires a greater degree of concentration, as Kurumi would normally only use her shadow to fill the size of a single building.[6] While the ability can consume the lifespan of non-humans, there is little benefit from beings with considerably shorter lives.[7]

Nevertheless, Shido has been shown able to passively resist the debilitating effects of the City of Devouring Time through the Reiryoku of the Spirits he had sealed up to that point. Likewise, ordinary humans enhanced by Miku's March have also been shown able to overcome this effect as well. However, in the former case, Kurumi has shown the ability to successfully pin down Shido to drain his energy if her shadow is condensed to only focus on him.[8]

Clones

Combined with the power of the Eighth bullet, she can create a clone that has all her experiences, memories, and abilities; they use her guns, summon and dismiss Spacequakes at will, and even summon the <City of Devouring Time>. These clones are kept in her shadows' "storage half", and can be brought out en masse at Kurumi's behest. When still in Kurumi's shadow, the clones can also restrain targets by taking on the form of long white hands with a red outline. The clones are often used for reconnaissance and can deliver information verbally or directly convey it to the original Kurumi’s head, though the latter method requires <Yud> and risks overloading her with too much information at once.

However, her clones are weaker than the real Kurumi, and they cannot use the time-manipulating bullets of her Angel. The physical abilities and lifespan of the clones are scaled in accordance with the amount of time used for the Eighth Bullet. In other words, in order to produce longer-lasting clones, Kurumi needs to expend even greater amounts of time. Also, as these are her past selves, they sometimes may contain feelings that the current Kurumi no longer possesses. As such, Kurumi will not hesitate to kill these clones if they choose to disobey her. In desperate situations, the time used to create the clones can also be sacrificed as a direct fuel for her other bullets. However, thanks to the unique mental time travel properties of the Sixth Bullet, Kurumi was able to regain her clones and time with each loop by using them to activate the bullet.

If a clone is killed, her body will dissolve into shadows. If the original Kurumi dies, the clones will all disappear. However, Kurumi was able to temporarily keep one clone alive by sending it into the future with her Eleventh Bullet. She was even able to transfer her memories and Sephira Crystal to a clone before the original body was killed, though this requires preparation. However, Kurumi would later admit that this is only a temporary measure at best due to a clone's naturally short lifespan. Consequently, Kurumi then had to restore her original body with the Fourth Bullet and then re-transferred everything back to her original body in order to fully stabilize her condition.

Shadow Manipulation

Kurumi is able to quickly enter any shadow for a speedy escape. The territory within her own shadow serves as her own personal pocket dimension. According to Kurumi, her shadows are composed of two layers. The first layer is a free storage space where she can safely deposit and summon her clones at any given moment. The second layer is a digestive stomach where she breaks down victims to absorb their time. Since it's akin to looking into her own stomach, Kurumi is unable to check up or inspect victims that are sent to the latter area. Her ordinary bullets are also created from condensed portions of her shadow, allowing for a quick reload after each shot.

Rasiel

Angel: Rasiel (囁告篇帙ラジエル, Rajieru?. lit. "Tome of Revelation")

Weapon: Book

After Kurumi extracted Nia Honjo's Qlipha Crystal from Sir Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, she reverted it to a Sephira Crystal with <Dalet> before bonding with it. As a result, she gained a new Astral Dress that has Nia's Astral Dress overlapped with her own. Just like Nia, Kurumi has also gained the ability to use <Rasiel> in order to search for information. Kurumi would use its powers to extensively research the existence of magic that gave rise to Spirits, the esoteric arts kept in tradition long before the Realizer was created, and the numerous magical artifacts that were once created by mages.[9] During the battle royal, Kurumi only fought until she exhausted the ability to use Rasiel and its corresponding Astral Dress, showcasing that she can also use this Angel for combat as well.

Wizard

One of Kurumi's clones turned herself into a Wizard by stealing a CR-Unit from a DEM Wizard and having the other clones implant a Realizer in her brain. She serves as the antagonist of Encore 8.

Much later, after losing her Spirit powers, the original Kurumi is deemed capable of using a wireless headset Realizer to create a Territory. Like the other Spirits, her compatibility comes from how the study of Spirits led to the creation of the Realizer in the first place. As such, she comes equipped with one of the <Ygdd Folium> leaves, which she can manually control as a shield to protect Shido during the confrontation against <Beast>.

  • <Atlach-Nacha> (アトラナート, Atoranāto?): A black-and-white CR-Unit with a skirt reminiscent of spider legs. She uses it to infiltrate the dreams of Shido and the Spirits in an attempt to unsettle them and cause Reiryoku backflow. She can create laser silk resembling spider webs to subdue the Spirits.

Trivia

  • Kurumi has the character "three" (三) in her first name, referring to the third Sephira on Kabbalah's Tree of Life, "Understanding."
  • Zafkiel's bullet names are derived from Gematria, a system that uses letters from the Hebrew Alphabet to represent numbers. For example, Aleph, the first bullet (from 1 o'clock) represents the first letter. The bullets are numbered from 1 to 12 in this system
  • Elohim means "God" in Hebrew.
  • Zafkiel's name refers to an archangel. The angel is sometimes equated with Zophiel/Jophiel, but other times considered to be a different angel. Zaphkiel is the "chief of the order of thrones", one of the 9 angels that rule Heaven and also one of, the 7 archangels.
  • In the anime, Kurumi appeared in episode 5 as a cameo as a girl holding a red umbrella.
  • Kurumi's last name contains the Kanji for "Time" (時, Toki?) and "Coastal Cape" (崎, Saki?).
  • Kurumi was the first character to be conceptualized, with the initial outline for her character created before even the series.[20]
  • The four Kurumi clones that the original Kurumi views the most troublesome are collectively referred to as the Elite Four Kurumi (四天王狂三, Shiten'nō Kurumi?). [21]
    • One of the Elite Four Kurumi refers to the group (plus the original) as the Gotoubun no Tokisaki, a reference to the manga Gotoubun no Hanayome (五等分の花嫁, The Quintessential Quintuplets?). [22]
    • When the Elite Four are approached by Sawa, they further distinguish themselves by identifying themselves with individual given names. The eyepatch Kurumi is called Manami (眼三), the bandaged Kurumi is Tsutsumi (包三), the sweet lolita Kurumi is Amami (甘三), and the Japanese gothic lolita Kurumi is Kazami (和三).
  • Atlach-Nacha is a spider deity from the Cthulhu Mythos.
  • Her favorite things are animals, and her least favorite are humans. [23]
  • Tachibana has observed a tendency for her name to be misread as “Kyouzou” (きょうぞう).[24][25]
  • In the early drafts, Zafkiel was a fork and knife-type Angel to fit Kurumi's theme of eating people. [26]
  • Due to her unique clock eye, Kurumi is the exception to the rule where the Spirit's eye color matches their corresponding Sephirot gem. Instead, her pearl gem was used as a description of her pearly skin tone. [26]
  • As an anthropomorphic disaster, Kurumi represents a mysterious disappearance from being spirited away.[26]
  • Kurumi's birthday June 10th is the Anniversary of Time (時の記念日, toki no kinenbi?) in Japan. While not a national holiday, it commemorates how the first water clock was set and started working in Japan on June 10, 671.
