― Episode preview

And Her Choice Is (そして彼女が選ぶのは, Soshite Kanojo ga Erabu no wa?) is the twelfth and final episode of Date A Live Ⅴ.

Synopsis[]

Despite her initial surprise over Shido's suggestion that she created him with the hidden intent of ending her life, Mio sadly concludes that he may be correct. Nevertheless, she also recognizes that he has no intention of fulfilling such a goal. Admitting that is the case, Shido boldly declares his desire to steal her away from Shinji. The shocking response causes Mio to burst into laughter, after which she asks Shinj for his opinion on the matter. Shinji questions if he is even qualified to respond due to being a copy derived from an imitation. However, Mio teasingly remarks that Shido might succeed in taking her away if he doesn't speak up. At first, Shinji angrily yells at Shido for asking Mio to move on from him, but eventually, Shinji concedes that he is no longer actually here and he wants Mio to see more of the world.

Their conversation is soon interrupted by them sensing a massive disturbance outside of the sphere. Mio realizes that Westcott had taken the opportunity of her being distracted to recreate the Spirit Formula onto himself in order to gain the same level of power as her. While acknowledging the hypocrisy of asking for help when she was the one who killed the Spirits in the other timeline, Mio still requests Shido's assistance. Shido gladly accepts and the two depart after biding a final farewell to Shinji and Reine. After exiting the sphere, Shido and Mio confront Westcott and his forces with the other Spirits. Westcott quickly attempts to summon his new Demon King Belial to rewrite reality. However, Mio manages to momentarily halt his efforts by summoning Ain Soph to counter him. Mio then pierces the chests of Mana, Shido, and the sealed Spirits with a piece of Astral Dress, but this time it's done to grant them full access to their power. In the process of strengthening them, Nia and Kotori regain usage of their respective Astral Dress and Angel.

As the final battle commences, Origami and Mana clash against Artemisia and Ellen respectively. Mio states that since Shido has all of their powers, he can condense them to land a decisive blow. Westcott summons Athiel, a darkened flower that emits particles of darkness that can instantly kill anything that comes in contact, to stop their advance. To counter this, Nia reveals that she has used her newly regained Rasiel to help MARIA gain physical form in a similar manner to the Nibelcole. Although rather humorously, MARIA still lacks any respect for Nia and tasers the Second Spirit when she gives her an order. Since the MARIA copies can infinitely spawn from Rasiel's pages as long as Nia has Reiryoku, they provide cover to defend the others from Athiel's instant death particles.

As Westcott attempts to retaliate by weaponizing Belial's branches, the other Spirits use their Angels to clear a path for Shido. By channeling the power of all ten Angels into his fist, Shido lands a devastating punch to Westcott that crashes him into Belial. The DEM director's sustained injuries have destabilized his powers enough that the demonic tree shatters. However, Westcott still has one last trick up his sleeve. By using his last Demon King Qemetiel, he gathers the darkness in order to erase them all. Mio, sensing that the ensuing damage would exceed even the Eurasia Sky Disaster, prepares to sacrifice herself by using Ain to minimize the damage. Despite Shido's pleas for her to not go through with this, Mio compliments Shido for being a wonderful person, but she still prefers Shin more. She then throws Shido to safety before going to confront Westcott. Before their Angel and Demon King clash, Westcott asks the Spirit of Origin where he went wrong. Mio remarks that the power of the Spirits is something that should have never been brought to this world, but then she snidely remarks that he was never her type if that was another cause of his misery. The unexpected rejection causes Westcott to manically laugh as Qemetial's clash with Ain causes a miniature explosion.

In the ensuing aftermath, Mio wakes up while greeted by Shinji in the afterlife. Crying tears of joy over finally being reunited, the two reconfirm their wish to be together forever. Elsewhere, Westcott is on his death throes as Ellen desperately tries to find a way to save him. The two are approached by Woodman and Karen, who have come to witness his final moments. Westcott asks if his old rival came here to mock him one last time. While holding back tears, Woodman states that he is here to see the last moments of his friend. In his dying breath, Westcott reconfirms their friendship, acknowledging that they are comrades who were both rejected by the same woman. Seeing the misery that his impending death is causing for his childhood friends, Westcott ends up dying content. On the beach at nighttime, Shido also wakes up to find himself surrounded by the other Spirits. Shido tries to take solace in Mio's sacrifice by remarking that she can now reunite with Shinji. Kotori tries to reassure him by commenting that he never had a chance against a pure love couple. However, at that moment Mio's lingering Sephira Crystal descends with her cherished stuffed bear plushie. The sight of the memento causes everyone to cry as they mourn over Mio's death.

A few days later, a montage is shown of everyone resuming their daily lives. Natsumi is seen with Yoshino while fending off Miku's advances. Kotori is talking to her friends back at her middle school. Mukuro revisits Tengu Tower with the Yamai twins. Nia has reconciled with Takajo and is going on an excursion with her. Kurumi is seen petting some cats with someone who looks to be Sawa. Lastly, Tohka meets up with Shido as they prepare to go on another date.

Trivia[]

Major Events[]

  • Having finally connected with Mio, Shido convinces her that her true subconscious goal is to create something capable of killing herself and that he would "steal her" away from Shinji.
  • Shido and a reformed Mio band together with the other Spirits to stop Westcott from using his newfound powers to rewrite reality.
  • Disrupted by Shido's intervention, Westcott tries to take everyone down with him using Qemetiel: the Demon King version of Mio's third Angel, Ain.
  • To save Shido and everyone else, Mio uses Ain to counter Qemetiel, killing both her and Westcott in the process; but not before admitting that she loves Shido (though not to the same extent as Shinji).
  • After Mio reunites with Shinji in the afterlife, Shido finds Mio's bear plushie and mourns her death.

Differences from the Light Novel[]

  • The Spirits' attempt to fight Westcott before Shido and Mio leave <Ain Soph> is omitted.
  • In the novel, only Origami and Mana were at risk of getting killed by <Athiel> before MARIA blocked the petals, as Ellen and Artemisia had prevented them from getting out of range like their allies. In the anime, Shido's side were seemingly all at risk before MARIA's intervention.
  • In the novel, Shido calls out the name of each Angel as he approaches Westcott. In the anime, each Spirit calls out their respective Angel instead.
  • Westcott's injuries from his <Qemetiel> colliding with Mio's <Ain> are toned down, losing only his right arm instead of most of his body.

General[]

  • This episode title shares the same name as chapter 5 of Volume 19.
  • Nia's line towards MARIA, I choose you (キミにきめた, kimi ni kimeta?), is a shoutout to the catchphrase used by Ash Ketchum when he sends out a Pokemon.
