Hello, everyone. It's been a while since I've made in a post in the Date A Live forun, so I thought it would be a good idea to discuss whether or not the Spirits deserve redemption after all the things they've done throughout the story.
Let me start this post by pointing out that some of the Spirits have endured difficult lives before they became Spirits, like Yoshino losing her mother, Miku getting slandered by a producer and almost having her career ruined and Natsumi having a terrible home life. Suddenly, the Spirits meet Phantom, who gives them superpowers, they themselves don't understand much less control. Some of them, like Yoshino, Kotori and the Yamai twins, can control primal forces of nature, and if left unchecked, these powers could and have probably caused death and destruction throughout their lives. Kotori caused a huge fire 5 years before the beginning of the story, Yoshino caused a blizzard in the middle of a densely populated city, the Yamai twins caused a hurricane in the coast of a populated islanda and Kurumi isn't afraid to kill people in service of some higher goal.
In my opinion, when the Spirits meet Shido, they see some part of themselves in him or rather see the people they could be had they not let despair get the better of them. The Spirits see Shido as the person they could have been, and can there be any better moment in the life of a person than to see someone they care about be a better version of him/herself?
I'm not saying that the Spirits (except Kurumi) directly hurt people with their powers and actions because Spirits use their powers in multiple ways and we don't see Spirits going out of their way to attack people. Tohka only uses her powers for self-defense, Yoshino wouldn't even harm a fly and Kotori tries really hard to keep her powers in check. Still, for the sake of an argument, let's say that bystanders were hurt thanks to the Spirits, which, in my opinion, raises a couple of fascinating questions: "just how many wrongs is too many to come back from and be forgiven for? Just where is that line? And can any number of rights undo those wrongs?"
The thing is, for every person, those answers are going to be completely different, and I'm sure that, in all our lives, we had people who will never forgive us for the smallest things, while others have forgiven us for our greatest mistakes, and I think the real key here isn't whether or not society thinks you deserve redemption because a broad sense of redemption is always gonna get difficult, if not impossible to earn in a world full of so many different opinions and beliefs, but what matters and you should be judged by is whether or not you try for redemption and try to right the wrongs you've done.
Because here's thing, we're all going to make mistakes in this life and sometimes, those mistakes will hurt other people, but if we're lucky, we will get the chance to try and do the right thing and get redemption in the eyes of a few or, in the Spirits' case, even just one, Shido. And even though the rest of the world, had they likely known the full truth, would have likely never forgiven the Spirits, Shido did forgive them and I think if you could ask the Spirits which they wanted more, redemption in the eyes of Shido or redemption the eyes of the world, they'd pick Shido, any day, no questions asked.
And I think the same holds true for almost all of us, that we have at least one person in our lives that we wish we could ask forgiveness to and get redemption from and that forgiveness from that one person means more to us than what the rest of the world thinks about us.
Well, that's all I have for you this time. Now, it's your turn to tell me what do you think about the Spirits' redemption and Shido's forgiveness. This is meant to be a friendly conversation, so please be polite and write your opinions in a civilized manner. We're all Date A Live fans here, we just see things differently. So leave your comments below, thanks for your time and stay safe out there!
